By Timothy M. Harte, MA, LCPC

Summary:

The Exchange Hotel is located at State & Jennings Street, in Newburgh, Indiana. It was built in 1841 by Joseph L. Spitz. Another man bought the property in 1850, Zaven Hazen. In 1854 it was enlarged to hold more travlers. In 1856 it was sold to Mr. Thornburg and Mr. Wyman. in 1861 it was turned into a hospital and armory during the Civil War. In July 18th ,1862, some marauders captured and pillaged the town of Newburgh. Two suspected traitors were attacked and killed by some of the town citizens. "Their bodies were hung upside down in the doorway of the hotel as a reminder to the people of what happens to traitors in wartime" ( Bryant, 2002 ). The Southern Indiana Paranormal Investigators and MESA members joined to investigate the site and record haunt phenomena. The team captured some unusual shadows on video, anomalous vibration, and one magnetic sensor showed anomlous activity. There was also one anomalous digital image, which revealed an orb using the 2-camera system.

Introduction:

The owners of the hotel had reported some interesting haunt phenomena. A full interview was not conducted at the time due to time constraints. But the phenomena included footsteps, apparitions, and object movement in a different parts of the hotel.

Method:

The researchers set up MESA, the 2 - camera digital magnetometer system, infrared
and night shot video cameras in several places on the first floor in the antique store.
The MESA system was set up for two- hour sampling period. MESA was also complemented
with the Vernier system and other equipment supplied by the Southern Indiana
Paranormal Investigators.

Apparatus:

The MESA computer system has been described elsewhere ( Harte, Black, Hollinshead,
1999; Harte, Black, Hollinshead, & Mitchell, 2001) and this investigation will focus on
anomalous results of the investigation. The researchers are primarily looking for a 7 mG
change in the graphs, or other anomalous information. A sampling rate of 40 times per second
was programmed, as this is the usual rate. Sound and video systems were utilized at this
site. An infrared camera ( Clover Electronics, www. cloverelectronics.com) and PZM
(pressure zone microphone, Radio Shack) were connected to a video cassette recorder.

Vernier: The Vernier system utilized motion and magnetic sensors. Both of the motion sensors recorded anomalous motion during the sampling period.

Photographs: One photographs reveal an orb using the two camera system.

Video: Infrared light camera revealed some shadows in the back of the building moving, and more research and analysis is needed at this time.

Audio: No anomalous audio was recorded.

Subjective results: The team was not in the area for this investigation, and nothing was experienced outside the hotel.

Discussion: The researchers remain puzzled about the results, especially on ultraviolet light, vibration, and static magnetic fields. The types of physical energy recorded may cause some types of anomalous phenomena. More research of this area is needed.

Waverly Hills Sanitarium Pananormal Convention

Title: Waverly Hills Sanitarium
Date: September 24-25, 2005
Researchers: Billy Miller, Adria Vanover, Connie Boyer, Chad and Elyssa Noonan,
Jerry and Sharon Basow, Timothy M. Harte, MA, LCPC

Summary:

The Waverly Hills Sanitarium has a long and rich history of haunt phenomena. MESA
and members of other groups joined to investigate the site and record haunt phenomena.
The team experienced several subjective experiences, pinlight orbs were captured on
video, anomalous 60 Hz magnetic spikes were recorded, and some anomalous digital
images revealed shadow-type forms.

Intorduction:

The Waverly Hills Sanitarium opened in 1926, inLouisville, Kentucky. It was built at a
cost of 1.1 million dollars. Tuberculosis was rampant around the Louisville area, and it
was also described as swampy at that time. The death rate was very high for the people
that contracted tuberculosis. The hospital was known for its '' state of the art'' treatment,
which was still experimental and barbaric. Ultraviolet light was used to alleviate the disease.
Many different procedures and experiments were conducted. The hospital features a large,
5-story building with many patient rooms, nurse stations, and bathroom facilities. The
building closed in 1961 and reopened in 1962 as a geriatric hospital and nursing home. It was
then called Woodhaven Geriarics Sanitarium. Many stories circulated that the patients
suffered mistreatment and horrible conditions. Woodhaven was closed in 1982 because of
alleged abuse to patients. The building was sold to several different owners over the next
18 years. One owner wanted to tear it down, but was stopped because it was on the National
Historic Register list. An owner then decided to let it decay. Vandals, thieves, homeless and
teenagers took it over. Rumors of satanic rituals, drug and alcohol parties, and homeless people
living within its walls continued. Most of the marble was stripped away, as well as all of the
toilets, sinks, radiators, and glass windows. Rumors began that the hospital was haunted.
Stories of phantom children, rooms lighting up withno power to thebuliding, doors slamming,
voices, and even ghost hearses dropping off coffins were told. Especially eerie was the story
of an apparition of a woman bleeding from her wrists, with chains on her, running from the
buliding and screaming. The owners now are beginning to put windows back into the massive
structure. Previous investigations have yielded a variety of experiences. These experiences
included apparitions, sensed presences, erratic functioning of equipment including magnetic
field meters. Hot and melted meters and equipment, cold spots, cooking food smells, footsteps,
sounds of doors closing, orbs of light on digital and film cameras, flickering lights and
luminosities, electronic voice phenomena, voices of people telling the researchers to '' get out'',
and object movement of doors closing or slamming shut. Several researchers have been attacked by object falling from the ceiling, or by unknown presences that have scratched, pushed or
tripped them.

Method: The researchers set up MESA, the 2- camera digital magnetometer system, infrared
and night shot video cameras inseveral places on the third floor. The MESA system was set up
for two one hour sampling periods at the Southerly most hallway of the third floor. MESA
was also complemented with a system used by Parascience (parascience. us) and other
equipment supplied by the Southern Indiana Paranormal Investigators, and the
Parahunters Indiana groups.

Apparatus: The MESA computer system has been described elsewhere ( Harte, Black,
Hollinshead, 1999; Harte, Black, Hollinshead, & Mitchell, 2001) and this investigation
will focus on anomalous result of the investigation. The researchers are primarily looking for

a 7 mG change in the graphs, or other anomalous information A sampling rate of 40 times
per second was programmed, as this is the usual rate. Sound and video systems were
utilized at this site. An infrared camera ( Clover Electronics, www.cloverelectronics.com)
and PZM (pressure zone microphone, Radio Shack) were connected to a video cassette recorder.

Site 1: This site produced unusual results in several channels.

Channel 1: Infrared light sensor: The infrared light shows a steady reading at 7 footcandles.
There are 6 negative dips to as much as 4 footcandles, and the researchers are not sure what
would account for these. At this time it is anomalous changes.

Channel 2: Visible light sensor: The Visible light is about 69 footcandles, and there are two
negative fluctuations to 40 and 32 footcandles, respectively. This is also anomalous.

Channel 3: Ultraviolet light sensor: The ultraviolet sensor recorded between 0.2 and 0.3
milliwatt per centimeter squared changes during this sampling period. The researchers think
this is normal, as the sensor was exposed to a UV light set up by Parascience in this hallway.

Channel 4: Tri- Field Meter: The Tri- Field Meter recorded normal changes during this
sampling period. These levels were between 0.3 mG and 0.7 mG throughout the sampling
period. What would account for this would be a 60 Hz electricity source from wiring.

Channel 5: Gamma ray detector: The sensor recorded the gamma ray background noise
for this structure. It shows four higher then usual events, which is not anomalous.

Channel 6: Static magnetic sensor pointed West: This sensor recorded a steady level of
0 mG over the course of 55 minute period. There are no unusual fluctuations during the
sampling period.

Channel 7: Static magnetic sensor pointed UP: This sensor recorded almost 0 mG to 1.8
mG changes. This is not enough to cause haunt activity.

Channel 8: Static magnetic sensor pointed UP: This sensor recorded about the same changes
as channel 7. There are 0 mG up to 2 mG changes. Not enough for anomalous activity.

Chittyville School

Investigations: MESA Reprot
Chittyville School, Herrin, IL.
Date: Stepember 2005
Researchers: MESA ( Billy Miller, George Hall and Timothy M. Harte)
By Timothy M. Harte, MA, LCPC

Summary: Mesa ( Mulit-Energy Sensor Array)contacted the staff at the Chittyville School,
Herrin, IL to conduct an investigation. It is located on Chittyville Road in Herrin. Some unusual
results were recorded, along with subjective results that were experienced during the
investigation. Anomalous energies were also recored during investigation.

Background: The school was built in 1939, as part of the WPA projects. It was purchased recently by the King family to house storage and business offices. They reported auditory
phenomena ( footsteps, and voices talking) and sensed presences usually in the gymnasium,
feeling as if someone is behind them, or they feel as if they are not alone in that area. They
also reported object movement of blinds moving, radios erratically functioning, dogs would
not come in the building, and nightmares when sleeping there.

Apparatus: MESA group members utilize digital cameras, infrared non-contact
thermometers, and digital recorders to record haunt phenomena. They continue to record
anomalous phenomena at sites using these devices and techniques. The MESA computer
system has been decribed elsewhere (Harte, Black& Hollinshead, 1999; Harte, Black,
Hollinshead & Mitchell, 2001) and this report will focus on the anomalous results of the
investigation. MESA is comprised of a Dell laptop computer connected to an A/D box that
changes analog information from sensors into digital information. The sensors are connected
to the A/D box with new 12 foot BNC cables (Radio Shack) and then to the laptop with a
parallel cable. The sensors include infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light, electromagnetic
field (60 Hz Tri- Field meter by AlphaLab, Inc) and 3 static magnetic field (0 to 0.5Hz by
Speake and Company) sensors. The vibration sensor was omitted for this investigation.
The researchers are primarily looking for a 7 mG change inthe magnetic fields. A sampling
rate of 40 times per second was utilized. Sound and video were captured using an infrared
camera( Clover Electronics, www.cloverelectronics.com and a PZM (pressure zone microphone,
Radio Shake) connected to a Behringer 802B mixer. The mixer is then connected to a Sharp
VHS recorder with RCA cables. The Vernier system was also deployed at this site. It has 2
motion detectors, 2magnetic field sensors, and a visible light sensor.

Results: MESA was deployed on the gymnasium stage left for this investigation. The owners
reported sensed presences. Two sampling periods was conducted. The usual 40 samples a
second was chosen. The first sampling period was approximately 8:30 to 9:30 P.M. The
second was 9:40 to10:40 P.M.

Site: 1

Channel 1: The infrared sensor recorded 7 anomalous events during the sampling period.
The negative fluctuations go from 7 down to 3 footcandles in some instances.

Channel 2: Visible light shows a steady level of 68 footcandles throughout the sampling period.

Channel 3:There was an extremely low level of ultraviolet light recorded in the room, from
0.1 mW/cm squared to about 0.2 W/cm squared during the sampling period. Still slightly
unusual for this area.

Channel4: There is a wavering 0.7 to 1.7 mG 60 Hz electromagnetic field level in the room.
This is unusual for this room, and may cause a sensed presence.

Channel 5: There are unusual chgnges in the floor of the stage in the gymnasium. From24 to
48 minutes, there are 7 changes during the sampling period. More sampling needs to be done
on the floor of the room for better data.

Channel 6: The static magnetic field sensor pointed west recorded changes between 9 and 2
mG. This is anomalous.

Channel 7: This static magnetic filed sensor pointed up recorded changes between 11 and 4
mG. This is anomalous.

Channel 8: This static magnetic field sensor pointed north recorded changes between 6mG
and above 12 mG. This is anomalous.

Photographs: Digital photographs revealed several pictures with orbs, and were caught with
the 2- camera system.

Video: Infrared video revealed some unusual orbs. We need to do further analysis at this time.

Audio: No unusual audio was recorded at this site.

Subjecive results: During the investigatinn, the researchers heard footsteps and voices
when no one else was in the building.

Discussion: The evidence gathered at this point is conclusive, and the researchers think
the energies recorded at this site could produce haunt activity. We want to think the owners
for allowing us to do an investigation and we hope to go back in the future.
