The Waverly Hills Sanatorium has a long and rich history of haunt phenomena. MESA (multi-energy sensor array) and members of other groups joined to investigate the site and record haunt phenomena. The team experienced several subjective experiences, pinlight orbs were captured on digital and 8 mm video and anomalous 0-0.5 Hz magnetic field spikes and infrared light were recorded.

The Waverly Hills Sanatorium opened in 1926. It was built at a cost of 1 million dollars at the time. Tuberculosis was rampant around Louisville area, and it was also described as swampy at the time. The death rate was very high for the people that contracted tuberculosis. The hospital was known for its "state of the art" treatment, which was still experimental and barbaric for that time. Ultraviolet light was used to alleviate the disease. Meny different procedures and experiments were conducted. The hospital features, a large 5 story building with many patient rooms, nurse stations, and bathroom facilities. The building closed in 1961 and then reopened in 1962 as a geriatric hospital and nursing home. It was then called Woodhaven Geriatrics Sanatorium. Many stories circulated that the patients suffered mistreatment and horrible conditions. Woodhaven was closed in 1982 because of alleged abuse to patients. The building was sold to several different owners over the next 18 years. One owner wanted to tear it down, but was stopped because it was on the National Historic Register list. An owner then decided to let it decay. Vandals, thieves, homeless people and teenagers took it over. Rumors of satanic rituals, drug and alcohol parties, and homeless people living within its walls continued. Most of the marble was stripped away, as well as all of the toilets, sinks, radiators, and glass windows. Rumors began that the hospital was haunted. Stories of phantom children, rooms lighting up with no power to the building, doors slamming, voices, and even ghost hearses dropping off coffins were told. Especially eerie was the story of an apparition of a woman bleeding from the wrists, with chains on her, running from the building screaming. The new owners have had the building since 2000 Charles and Tina Mattingly. They are presently opening the hospital to tours and overnight investigations. They eventually hope to raise enough money to keep it open as a business. Previous investigations have yielded a variety of experiences included apparitions, sensed presences, erratic functioning of equipment including magnetic field meters. Hot and melted meters and equipment, cold spots, cooking food smells, footsteps, sounds of doors closing, orbs of light on digital and film cameras, flickering lights and luminosities, electronic voice phenomena, voices of people telling researchers to " get out," and object movement of doors closing or slamming shut. Several researchers have been attacked by objects falling from the ceiling, or by unknown presences that have scratched, pushed or tripped them.

Method: The researchers set up MESA, infrared and night shot video cameras in several places on the first floor. The MESA system was set up for 1 one hour sampling period in the room that was once the morgue. MESA was also complemented with a system used by SIGHT and other equipment supplied by the Southern Indiana Paranormal Investigators, which included a Vernier photogate.

Apparatus: The MESA computer system been described elsewhere (Harte, Black, Hollinshead, 1999; Harte, Black, Hollinshead, & Mitchell, 2001) and this investigation will focus on anomalous results of the investigation. The researchers are primarily looking for a 7 mG change in the graphs, or other anomalous information. A sampling rate of 40 times Per second was programmed, as this is the usual rate. Sound and video systems were utilized at this site. An infrared camera (Clover Electronics, and PZM (pressure zone microphone, Radio Shack) were connected to a video cassette recorder.

Photographs: Hundreds of photographs of the hospital were taken this evening. Several photographs reveal orbs, shadows that seem to move to different parts of doors and hallways. This evidence must be interpreted cautiously to be anomalous, or unusual.

Video: HI 8 nightshot cameras, digital video cameras, and video reveled some pinlight orbs moving during the investigation. Some of these may have been caused by other equipment the researchers were utilizing at the time. Some of these were not caused by other equipment, as well.

Audio: One group recorded E.V.P. but the results have not been presented to this author.

Subject results: The teams experienced some unusual shadows, and saw the pinlight orbs moving and disappear on several floors of the building.

Discussion: The results on the magnetic fields and infrared light are encouraging for this sampling period. Visible light is also questioned. The previous investigations have not revealed unusual magnetic field results. We would like to thank Chad and Elyssa Noonan, and Billy Miller for help and logistics during this investigation. We also want to thank Charles and Tina Mattingly, the owners of Waverly Hills complex, to allow us to conduct an investigation.
